TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY
“Every breath you take” was written in 1982 by The Police. This song was written when String was suffering what he called a “mental breakdown” because of his first marriage.
This song is about jealousy, control, possession and rule-obeying. If you listen carefully to the song, it has a “sinister” meaning instead of being soft, gentle and smooth, it is about jealousy towards his ex-wife.
Sentences like “Every move you make, every vow you make, every smile you fake, every claim you stake, I’ll be watching you “ or “ Every breath you take, I’ll be watching you” prove that he had an obsession and wanted all the time to have his wife undercontrol.
“Every breath you take”, according to me, in terms of music is a 10 out of 10. I used to listen a lot to this song. I knew the lyrics by heart and I used to sing it out loud. It is curious how we don’t pay attention to the meaning of the song; we just sing and dance and we don’t even know what we are hearing behind the lyrics, I just don’t see it the way I used to do it. In conclusion, I really do think it is an amazing song but, at the very same time, I hate the way he feels that he has the control or the power to do so over his wife. Honestly, I think that this song is a clear reflection of how a lot of people think. Sadly, a lot of people feel above others or simply feel as if they have the power or control over another person. I think that Sting just gives voice to this feeling and way of thinking as, sadly, many people think and behave like that.
